Getting Started with Plone Hosting on Amazon EC2

Join the Plone community at Symposium East 2011 to learn about Plone! This training will guide you through the best practices for architecting your Plone hosting infrastructure on Amazon EC2, and introduce you to various tools to automate and make repeatable deployments. It is intended for system administrators and others responsible for deploying Plone sites.

Why Host Plone on Amazon EC2?

There are many benefits to hosting your Plone site on Amazon EC2:
  • Reduced bandwidth costs and faster load time of static assets using CloudFront (Amazon's CDN)
  • Monitoring of server health and alerting if problems occur using CloudWatch.
  • Seamless disaster recovery with repeatable deployments using buildout and mr.awsome
  • Easy launching of testing, staging and QA servers that are isolated from your production environment (stop when not used to avoid paying for them)
  • Pay-for-what-you-use metered pricing to launch servers on-demand during peak periods
  • Auto-scaling to launch new Zeo client machines and shut them down when no longer needed
What You Will Learn
  • Streamline your systems administration chores through automation and scripts
  • Lower your hosting costs through pay-for-what-you use pricing on Amazon
  • Architect a highly scalable and fault tolerant Plone hosting infrastructure on Amazon EC2
  • Create images (AMIs) and data volumes (EBS snapshots) that can be used to recreate your entire production environment in the event of a disaster recovery situation

Hands on examples will be used and at the end of the course, you will have a working production buildout that you can use for further exploration.

Benefits of the Class

  • Gain access to expert knowledge
  • Get your deployments under control
  • Utilize Amazon's architecture to get better performance out of Zope/Plone
  • Network and share ideas with like-minded professionals
  • Focus on improving your knowledge while removed from the interruptions of a busy office
